General Description
The Eye-bar goby, also known as the Shoulderspot goby, Yellowspot goby, Eyebar goby, or Anjer eye-bar goby, belongs to the Gobiidae family of fish. These small creatures are typically found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Society islands.
Aquarium Suitability
The Eye-bar goby is considered suitable for aquariums, given its average hardiness. It is generally docile but may exhibit some aggression towards similar species, so caution is advised when housing them with other fish. These gobies do best when provided with ample hiding spots within the tank and are known to filter sand in search of food, although they may not be as efficient at this task as some other sand-dwelling gobies.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Being shy and peaceful, the Eye-bar goby requires a watchful eye when cohabitating with more aggressive tank mates. They thrive in environments with good hiding places, such as live rocks, and are best kept as solitary individuals in the aquarium. Regular feeding several times a day is crucial, especially upon introduction to a new tank. These fish prefer a diet consisting of detritus, small crustaceans like krill and mysis, and zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods.
Reef Suitability
Regarded as reef safe, the Eye-bar goby is compatible with reef aquariums, adding to the diversity of marine life within such setups.
Aquarium Setup
For the optimal care of Eye-bar gobies, it is recommended to maintain a tank size of at least 150 liters. The water parameters should fall within the following ranges: pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature between 22.2-25.6 degrees Celsius, and a carbonate hardness of 8-12 dKH.
Behaviour
Eye-bar gobies are mostly peaceful in temperament but may display aggression towards members of the same species or similar-looking fish. They are known to be shy and often seek refuge in hiding spots within the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
These gobies require frequent feeding, particularly when first introduced to a new environment. Their diet should consist of detritus, small crustaceans, and zooplankton for a well-rounded nutritional intake.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, the Red Sea, Indonesia, New Zealand, and various parts of the Pacific Ocean, the Eye-bar goby prefers sandy substrates and rocky crevices in its natural habitat. Its distribution spans from the Red Sea to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Society Islands in the Pacific.
