General Description
The Half-barred goby, scientifically known as Priolepis semidoliata, belongs to the Gobiidae family of fish. These small fish are native to the expansive region of the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea all the way to Johnston Island and Pitcairn. Notably, in Hawaiian waters, they are replaced by Priolepis farcimen.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable with care for aquariums, the Half-barred goby is known for its secretive nature, often hiding from view and preferring overhangs and caves in its habitat. They are quite docile, which requires caution when housed with more aggressive tank mates. Due to their small size of around 2.0cm, special care must be taken to ensure they do not get lost in overflows.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
With an average level of hardiness, these gobies thrive in aquariums with adequate hiding spots like caves and overhangs. They are known to be shy and docile, necessitating attentive care when kept in a community tank. Regular feeding several times a day is crucial for their well-being, especially when newly introduced to a tank.
Reef Suitability
The Half-barred goby is considered always reef safe, making them ideal additions to reef aquariums. Their compatibility with reef environments ensures they can coexist peacefully with corals and other reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
For a successful aquarium setup for the Half-barred goby, it is essential to provide ample hiding spaces such as caves and overhangs. Creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat will help these secretive fish feel secure and thrive. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a salinity level of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C (72-78°F) is crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
Known for their secretive behavior, Half-barred gobies are seldom seen out in the open, preferring to stay hidden in their sheltered spots. Their docile temperament makes them suitable for peaceful community tanks where they can coexist harmoniously with other non-aggressive fish.
Feeding and Diet
In the aquarium, Half-barred gobies thrive on a diet consisting of small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. Their feeding regimen should include multiple feedings throughout the day, especially during the initial acclimation period.
Habitat and Distribution
The natural habitat of the Half-barred goby spans a wide range across the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea to Johnston Island and Pitcairn. These fish are typically found in areas with overhangs and caves where they can seek refuge and feel secure in their environment.
