General Description:

The Flame Goby, scientifically known as Trimma macrophthalmum, is a small fish belonging to the Gobiidae family. It is also commonly referred to as the Red-spotted pygmy-goby. Found in the Indo-West Pacific region from East Africa to Fiji and north to Japan, with recent sightings in Tonga, this species typically reaches a maximum size of 3.0cm.

Aquarium Suitability:

The Flame Goby, though small and docile, requires careful consideration when kept in aquariums due to its shy nature. It can be housed alone or in a group, but it is essential to provide ample hiding spots, such as live rocks, to ensure its well-being. It thrives in well-established aquariums with an abundance of micro-life like copepods and amphipods, which serve as a natural food source.

Demands:

This species is considered average in hardiness and can be sensitive during transportation and acclimatization to aquarium conditions. It may potentially face challenges from more aggressive tank mates due to its timid demeanor.

Care and Hardiness:

As a hermaphroditic species capable of changing gender between male and female, the Flame Goby requires a minimum tank size of 10 liters. It exhibits a docile temperament and benefits from a stable environment with good water quality parameters, including a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.

Reef Suitability:

The Flame Goby is considered reef-safe and can be safely housed within reef aquariums without posing a threat to coral or other invertebrates commonly found in reef environments.

Aquarium Setup:

When setting up an aquarium for the Flame Goby, it is crucial to include hiding places like live rocks to help it feel secure. Ensuring a suitable environment with a sufficient supply of microorganisms, such as copepods and amphipods, will facilitate its natural feeding behavior.

Behaviour:

This species is known for its shy and docile behavior, preferring to seek shelter in hiding spots within the aquarium. Due to its diminutive size and timid nature, it is essential to provide a peaceful tank environment to prevent stress.

Feeding and Diet:

Flame Gobies primarily feed on small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Offering a diverse diet rich in these food sources will help maintain the health and vitality of the species in captivity.

Habitat and Distribution:

Native to the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, and the Central/West Pacific, the Flame Goby inhabits areas with suitable hiding spots among rocks and crevices in coral reefs. Its distribution spans from East Africa to Fiji and north to Japan, with recent sightings recorded in Tonga.
