General Description

The Blackcap Basslet (Gramma melacara) belongs to the Grammatidae family and is commonly found in the Western Central Atlantic, particularly in regions like the West Indies, including the Bahamas and Central America. This species of Basslet is known for its striking appearance and coloration, resembling Dottybacks from the Pseudochromidae family.

Aquarium Suitability

Regarded as suitable for most aquarium setups, the Blackcap Basslet is considered a relatively easy and peaceful fish to care for. However, it is essential to note that while they can coexist with other peaceful species, they may display aggression towards similar species within the same genus. When housed together, Basslets typically prefer vertical rock structures with ample hiding spots mimicking their natural habitat, ensuring they have the opportunity to retreat when needed.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Known for their hardy nature, Blackcap Basslets are relatively low-maintenance fish once their basic needs are met. They prefer dim lighting initially to acclimatize, gradually increasing light exposure over time. Providing good hiding places, such as live rocks, is crucial for their well-being, as they tend to be shy and docile. These fish require a spacious tank, with a minimum size recommendation of 100 liters, to accommodate their territorial behaviors.

Reef Suitability

The Blackcap Basslet is considered reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef aquariums. Its peaceful demeanor and minimal impact on coral and other invertebrates allow for a harmonious cohabitation within a reef environment.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Blackcap Basslets, it is essential to incorporate vertical rock structures with multiple hiding spots. A tank size of at least 100 liters is recommended, with ample space for swimming and territorial behaviors. Maintaining water conditions within the parameters of pH levels between 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity range of 1.020-1.025, KH levels of 8-12, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C is crucial for their health and well-being.

Behaviour

Blackcap Basslets exhibit somewhat territorial behavior, especially when housed with similar species. They may engage in jaw-locking fights, necessitating careful observation and potential separation if aggression persists. In a suitable environment with adequate hiding spots, they tend to be less confrontational and more reclusive.

Feeding and Diet

These Basslets require a varied diet to thrive in captivity. Feeding them small crustaceans like krill, mysis, artemia, and zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods ensures they receive essential nutrients and maintain their overall health.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Blackcap Basslets are typically found in the Mexican Gulf and other regions within the Western Atlantic. Their presence in the wild reflects their preference for rocky environments with abundant hiding places, emphasizing the need to replicate such conditions in captivity for their well-being. This species has also been successfully bred in captivity, indicating the possibility of sustainable aquaculture practices.
