General Description
The White grunt (Haemulon plumierii) belongs to the Haemulidae family, specifically the Haemulidae - Haemulon group. These fish grow remarkably fast, reaching sizes of up to 53.0cm when fully developed. They are predatory and primarily feed on benthic crustaceans, worms, and fish, making them a threat to smaller fish, shrimps, small bivalves, worms, and snails.
Aquarium Suitability
The White grunt, although suitable for aquariums with care, demands a very large tank of at least 3000 liters due to its rapid growth and predatory nature. They require frequent feeding multiple times a day, particularly when newly introduced, and need a varied diet consisting of fish, larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans. These fish can thrive either individually or in groups but should be housed with caution as they can be aggressive towards similar species.
Care and Hardiness
Considered hardy, these fish require good hiding spots like live rocks in their tank setup. They need ample space for swimming and are heavy eaters, necessitating an aquarium that can handle their substantial feeding requirements.
Reef Suitability
White grunts are deemed reef-safe with caution, but their predatory nature may pose a risk to certain invertebrates and small fish commonly found in reef environments.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up an aquarium for White grunts involves creating abundant hiding places using live rocks. They prefer a well-balanced tank with stable water conditions, including a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) level of 8-12.
Behaviour
These fish are mostly peaceful but can exhibit aggression towards similar species, so proper care should be taken when housing them together in an aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
White grunts require a diet rich in nutrients and should be fed multiple times a day with a varied menu that includes fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates to ensure their optimal health and growth.
Habitat and Distribution
These fish are commonly found in the Mexican Gulf and the West Atlantic regions, where they inhabit diverse marine environments.
