General Description

The Blackspotted rubberlip (Plectorhinchus gaterinus), also known as the Black-spotted grunt, belongs to the Haemulidae family. These fish are distinguished by their rapid growth rate, reaching a maximum size of 50.0cm. They are found in the Western Indian Ocean, from the Red Sea south to Natal, South Africa, Mauritius, Madagascar, and the Comoro Islands.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered suitable for aquariums with caution, this species demands a very large tank of at least 2000 liters when fully grown due to its fast growth rate. They are not recommended for smaller home aquariums due to their size and predatory nature, posing a threat to small fish, shrimps, bivalves, worms, and snails. They require frequent feeding, a varied diet, and ample space for swimming.

Care and Hardiness

With an average hardiness level, the Blackspotted rubberlip is quite docile but requires careful consideration when housed with more aggressive tank mates. They consume a significant amount of food and necessitate a tank that can accommodate such a heavy load. Providing hiding places, such as live rocks, is essential for their well-being.

Reef Suitability

Reef-safe with caution, these fish can be kept in a reef aquarium but should be monitored due to their predatory nature. They are known to sift through sand for food, which can disrupt the tank environment and deplete natural food sources quickly.
