General Description
The Flagtail Grunt, scientifically known as Kuhlia mugil, is a silver-colored marine fish with a long oval body and compressed sides, featuring a forked caudal fin with alternating black and white horizontal stripes. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species can reach a maximum length of sixteen inches, though commonly grows to around ten inches.
Aquarium Suitability
The Flagtail Grunt, also called the Barred Flagtail or Five Band Flagtail, is moderately suitable for aquariums. While typically found in groups in nature, it is not practical to keep schools of this species in aquariums due to their size requirements. A minimum tank size of 180 gallons is recommended, with water conditions including salinity between 1.020-1.025, temperatures ranging from 72°F to 78°F, pH levels of 8.1-8.4, and water hardness of 8-12 dKH.
Care and Hardiness
Considered a moderately demanding species, the Flagtail Grunt is hardy and active. It thrives in environments with proper water quality and adequate space for swimming. Being a carnivorous fish, it predominantly feeds on zooplankton and small meaty fish foods, showing a preference for nocturnal feeding habits.
Reef Suitability
This species is deemed reef-compatible, allowing them to coexist with coral and other reef inhabitants without causing harm.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate the Flagtail Grunt, the aquarium should mimic its natural habitat, with ample swimming space and potential hiding spots. Incorporating live rock structures can provide shelter and encourage natural behaviors. Maintaining stable water parameters and offering a varied diet are crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
Flagtail Grunts exhibit a semi-aggressive temperament, especially towards smaller or less dominant tank mates. They may establish a pecking order within a group or show territorial behavior, emphasizing the need for monitoring tank dynamics.
Feeding and Diet
Serving as carnivores, Flagtail Grunts primarily rely on zooplankton and meaty fish foods in their diet. Providing a diverse range of high-quality foods ensures proper nutrition and helps simulate their natural feeding patterns.
Dimorphism
Information on dimorphism was not provided.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Flagtail Grunts inhabit the edges of reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. Their distribution spans areas with suitable reef structures and adequate food sources, reflecting their preference for reef-associated environments.
