General Description
Hogfish, known scientifically as Bodianus oxycephalus, derive their name from their distinctive foraging behavior in the sand using their snouts to uncover food. These fish are recognizable for blowing water into the substrate and trailing fish that have disturbed the sand in their natural habitat.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums with caution, hogfish demand ample space to swim and hide, along with the need for careful consideration when housed with other species. As they mature, they can pose a threat to various invertebrates within the tank, displaying a predatory nature towards worms, snails, and small crustaceans.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Hogfish are known to be hardy and adapt well to various fish foods over time. However, they require large tanks for swimming and hiding, and they may exhibit aggressive tendencies towards more docile tank mates or those resembling themselves. Acclimating well to their environment, they initially show shyness and need sufficient hiding spots in the aquarium.

Behaviour
Hogfish are active swimmers that will sift through sand to find food, occasionally causing the water to become cloudy as they stir up detritus. Their assertive nature may lead to territorial disputes with tank mates, especially as they reach maturity.
Feeding and Diet
In the aquarium, hogfish will consume a variety of food items such as larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia. Care should be taken to provide a balanced diet that meets their predatory instincts and nutritional needs.
Habitat and Distribution
Natively found in the Northwestern Pacific region, hogfish inhabit subtropical and warm temperate waters ranging from Sagami Bay, Japan, to the northeastern coast of Taiwan. Their natural environment includes sandy substrates where they forage for food and seek shelter among rock formations.
