General Description:The Yellowcheek tuskfish, also known as the Orange-dotted tuskfish or Anchor tuskfish, is a species that belongs to the Labridae family - Choerodon genus. These fish can grow quite large, reaching up to 50.0cm in size. They are known for being very active and intelligent, requiring plenty of space due to their active nature.

Aquarium Suitability:Yellowcheek tuskfish are considered suitable for aquariums with care. However, they demand a very large tank, with a minimum size of 1000 liters when fully grown. They thrive better on their own, as they may exhibit aggressiveness towards other species, especially those similar to them.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness:Being rated with average hardiness, these tuskfish require specific care to thrive in captivity. They acclimatize best when introduced to the aquarium at a young age, as very small individuals can be delicate. They need frequent feeding, multiple times a day, as they are highly active fish. It's advised to provide hiding places like live rocks as these fish tend to rearrange rocks and sand in the tank.

Reef Suitability:Yellowcheek tuskfish are not considered reef-safe due to their predatory nature. They can pose a threat to various invertebrates such as shrimps, crabs, sea urchins, snails, and more. However, Choerodon fasciatus species are less likely to consume invertebrates and may be cautiously housed in a reef aquarium.

Aquarium Setup:The setup for a Yellowcheek tuskfish should include ample space for swimming, secure placement of rocks to prevent toppling, and good hiding spots between live rocks. Maintaining a large tank size and suitable hiding places is crucial for creating a suitable environment for them.

Behaviour:These tuskfish are known to be active and intelligent, sometimes exhibiting aggressive behavior towards similar species or when space is limited. They have a habit of rearranging rocks and sand in the tank while foraging for food.

Feeding and Diet:Yellowcheek tuskfish have a varied diet that includes larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like shrimp, crabs, krill, mysis, and artemia. Feeding them several times a day, especially during the acclimatization period, is necessary for their well-being.

Dimorphism:Some species in the Choerodon genus can change gender from female to male. This hermaphroditic trait allows them to adapt to specific reproductive needs within their environment. Moreover, these fish tend to thrive better without other members of the same species in the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution:Yellowcheek tuskfish are found in the Indo-West Pacific region, ranging from Sri Lanka to French Polynesia. They inhabit a variety of marine environments, showcasing their adaptability to different conditions within their natural range.
