General Description

The Blueside wrasse, also known as the Coralline wrasse or Blue-scaled wrasse, belongs to the Labridae family within the genus Cirrhilabrus. These fish are renowned for their vibrant colors, with males often displaying a more striking hue compared to females. They are predominantly peaceful, but males can exhibit aggression towards one another, especially if housed in small quarters.

Aquarium Suitability

Blueside wrasses are generally well-suited for aquarium life. They thrive in tanks of at least 100 gallons, preferably larger for multiple specimens. It is advisable to add the largest males last when keeping different species together to mitigate aggression. Males can change gender, and during courtship, they may exhibit color flashes to attract females.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

This species has an average hardiness level and requires a tank with ample swimming space and hiding spots. Blueside wrasses are sensitive during transportation and acclimatization. To maintain their vibrant colors, they need a high-quality diet of frozen and flake foods, fed at least twice daily. Adequate lid and security measures are necessary as they have a tendency to jump out of open aquariums.

Reef Suitability

Blueside wrasses are deemed reef-safe and are valuable in combating unwanted invertebrates commonly found in reef tanks. They can be a valuable addition to a reef aquarium due to their compatibility with coral and other reef inhabitants.

Aquarium Setup

Creating an ideal habitat for Blueside wrasses involves providing ample swimming room, live rocks for hiding, and ensuring a secure lid to prevent jumping. A well-established tank with stable water parameters (pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025, temperature 22.2-25.6°C) is essential for their health and well-being.

Behaviour

These fish are known for their shy and docile nature, making them vulnerable to aggression from more assertive tankmates. Blueside wrasses are active swimmers and sleep among rocks in a mucus cocoon. Care should be taken when choosing tankmates to prevent aggression.

Feeding and Diet

Blueside wrasses feed on a variety of foods including small crustaceans like krill and mysis, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Frequent feeding is necessary for their optimal health, especially during the initial acclimatization period.

Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction

Male Blueside wrasses are typically more brightly colored than females, with the ability to change gender under specific circumstances. Captive reproduction of this species is feasible, and maintaining a group with one male and several females can facilitate natural spawning behaviors.

Habitat and Distribution

Blueside wrasses are found in the Eastern Indian Ocean, including locations like the Rowley Shoals, Andaman Sea, and Western Pacific regions such as the Ryukyu Islands and Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitats encompass coral reefs where they forage for food and seek shelter among rocks and crevices.
