General Description

The Multicolor Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse, scientifically known as Cirrhilabrus lubbocki, belongs to the Labridae family. These fish are characterized by their vibrant and varied colors, with males often displaying brighter hues than females. They are relatively peaceful but can show aggression towards closely related species or when males compete with each other. Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse can change gender from male to female and vice versa and are known to sleep between rocks in a mucus cocoon.

Aquarium Suitability

These wrasses are generally suitable for most aquarium setups but require a tank of at least 300 liters, preferably more, with ample space for swimming. They are best kept as a pair (one male, one female) or with one male and multiple females to minimize aggression. Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse needs good hiding spots within the aquarium, and it is crucial to provide a secure lid as they are prone to jumping out of open tanks.

Demands, Care and Hardiness

This species exhibits an average level of hardiness and can be sensitive during transportation and acclimation. Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse is shy and docile, making it important to be cautious when housed with more aggressive tank mates. Regular feeding, multiple times a day, is essential, especially during the acclimatization period. Ensuring a varied and high-quality diet is crucial for maintaining their vibrant colors.

Reef Suitability

Considered reef-safe, these wrasses are excellent additions to reef aquariums. They can help control unwanted invertebrates such as flatworms and pyramid snails. Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse are active swimmers and should coexist well with other reef inhabitants, provided they have enough space and hiding spots.

Aquarium Setup

Setting up the aquarium for Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse requires a tank of at least 300 liters, with ample swimming space and hiding places among live rocks. Maintaining water conditions within the parameters of pH 8.1-8.4, dKH 8-12, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C is crucial for their well-being.

Behaviour

These wrasses can exhibit aggression towards food competitors but are generally peaceful towards other tank inhabitants. Males may display territorial behavior towards each other, especially during courtship. Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse is known for its colorful displays, especially when changing genders or during courtship rituals.

Feeding and Diet

Their diet should consist of small crustaceans like Krill and Mysis, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse should be fed multiple times a day to ensure they receive enough nutrition, especially if they do not have access to natural food sources in the tank.

Dimorphism

There is a significant difference in coloration between male and female Lubbock's Fairy Wrasses. Males often exhibit more vibrant and varied colors, while females tend to be less colorful. They can also change gender, with males occasionally transitioning to females, showcasing different color patterns during courtship.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the Western Central Pacific region, specifically in the Philippines and Celebes, Indonesia, Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse inhabits reef environments. They are commonly seen among live rocks, utilizing hiding spots for safety and rest. Understanding their natural habitat and behavior is crucial for replicating a suitable environment in captivity for these exquisite fish.
