General Description
The Pastel-green wrasse, scientifically classified as Halichoeres chloropterus, is a species belonging to the Labridae family. These fish are highly sought after in aquariums due to their attractive appearance and effective flatworm and pyramid snail control abilities. They can vary in feeding habits, with some consuming small invertebrates while others have the capability to crush crustaceans. Wrasses of this genus can sometimes feed on prey larger than themselves by smashing it against rocks.
Aquarium Suitability
Recommended for aquarists, these wrasses can become too large for smaller tanks and are best maintained in a pair (one male and one female) or with one male and several females. They are known to be comparatively peaceful but can exhibit aggression towards similar fish if not given enough space.
Demands, Care and Hardiness
The Pastel-green wrasse is considered to have average hardiness in aquarium settings. They prefer a deep sandy substrate of at least 2 inches to burrow when they feel threatened or need to rest. However, they are sensitive during transportation, so care must be taken to ensure their well-being during acclimatization.
Reef Suitability
Categorized as reef safe with caution, these wrasses can be kept in reef aquariums. However, they can pose a threat to certain inhabitants like sea urchins, small crustaceans, and tubeworms.
Aquarium Setup
To create an ideal environment for the Pastel-green wrasse, a tank of at least 600 liters is recommended. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, temperature ranging from 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025 is essential. Providing hiding spots and a well-aerated tank is beneficial for their well-being.
Behaviour
These wrasses exhibit shy and docile behavior and have a tendency to dig into the sand when feeling threatened or in need of rest. They also have excellent biological clocks but may require some time to readjust after transportation.
Feeding and Diet
In terms of diet, the Pastel-green wrasse prefers larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, small crustaceans like krill and mysis, and zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. They are known to feed on flatworms and pyramid snails, aiding in pest control in the aquarium.
Dimorphism
The Halichoeres chloropterus is known to be hermaphroditic; individuals can change gender from female to male as needed. This species can efficiently reproduce in captivity when given the appropriate conditions.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the Western Central Pacific region from the Philippines to the Great Barrier Reef, the Pastel-green wrasse is typically found in the Indo-Malayan area. These fish are commonly observed in reef aquaria due to their aesthetic appeal and usefulness in controlling unwanted invertebrates, making them a popular choice among marine enthusiasts.
