General Description

The Hogfish, scientifically known as Lachnolaimus maximus, belongs to the Labridae family. These fish are effective invertebrate hunters, preying on crustaceans, sea urchins, and worms in aquarium settings. They can pose a threat to smaller fish and require a large aquarium as they grow to their maximum size of approximately 91.0cm. Hogfish are known to search through sand for food, which can make the water cloudy and disturb detritus.

Aquarium Suitability

Hogfish are considered suitable for aquariums with caution. They are hardy fish but may exhibit aggressive behavior towards other species. These fish need ample hiding places, such as live rocks, and plenty of space for swimming, thus requiring a minimum tank size of 3000 liters. Their recommended diet includes fish, larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill and mysis.
