General Description

The Blackbar Hogfish, scientifically known as Bodianus speciosus, inhabits algae-rich rocky reef areas and employs elongated snouts and strong jaws with small teeth to forage for hard-shelled crustaceans. With a distinctive dorsal fin composed of multiple fins, including longer dorsal spines at the front and shorter spines towards the back, these sequential hermaphrodites are born female and can transition to males after residing in a male-less harem for approximately three years. Juveniles sport pale hues and a black spot near the dorsal fin base, with mature males developing a vertical black bar behind the pectoral fins, creating an effective camouflage for sandy and coral environments.

Aquarium Suitability

Noted for their easy care requirements, Blackbar Hogfish can thrive in aquariums with a minimum capacity of 1134 litres. Their semi-aggressive temperament necessitates caution when housing them with tank mates, making them suitable for marine setups with compatible companions.
