General Description
The Hooded Fairy Wrasse, scientifically known as Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus, was first described in 2003 and is recognized as the Coral Sea Wrasse. With a vibrant color palette ranging from rose, pink, orange, and yellow with purple-black edging on its dorsal and tail fins, this species displays intense colors, especially during courtship. Both males and females exhibit similar coloring, although males can have increased color intensity depending on their mood.
Aquarium Suitability
This peaceful and active Hooded Fairy Wrasse is suitable for fish-only or reef aquariums of 70 gallons or larger. They do not disturb corals or invertebrates, making them excellent additions to reef tanks. It's recommended to keep a single male with a group of females, ensuring the females are introduced before or at the same time as the male due to jumping behavior, necessitating a tight-fitting canopy.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Caring for the Hooded Fairy Wrasse is considered easy, making it ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They thrive in stable water conditions with a pH ranging from 8.1 to 8.4, a specific gravity between 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Reef Suitability
The Hooded Fairy Wrasse is reef-compatible, peacefully coexisting with corals and other invertebrates in a reef environment, enhancing the aesthetic of the tank with its striking colors.
Aquarium Setup
For an optimal aquarium setup, ensure a tank size of at least 70 gallons to accommodate the Hooded Fairy Wrasse and its active nature. A tight-fitting canopy is recommended to prevent jumping. Provide hiding spots and open swimming areas within the tank to cater to their behavioral needs.
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful demeanor, Hooded Fairy Wrasses are active swimmers within the aquarium, adding vibrancy and movement to the aquatic environment. They exhibit interesting behaviors, especially during courtship displays where their coloration intensifies.
Feeding and Diet
As carnivorous species, Hooded Fairy Wrasses prefer a diet of enriched frozen brine shrimp, frozen mysis, live brine shrimp, and other marine meats. To entice them to feed initially, offering live brine shrimp or frozen mysis is recommended.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in deep waters, the Hooded Fairy Wrasse is native to the Coral Sea. Their natural habitat includes reef environments with a diversity of marine life, reflecting their suitability for reef aquariums.
