General Description

The Red Flame Scallop, scientifically known as Lima scabra, is a member of the Limidae family. It is also referred to as the Flame Scallop or Red File Shell Clam due to its striking bright red mantel and red or white tentacles. The shell of the Flame Scallop is covered with fine bumps, giving it a file-like texture. This species can grow up to a maximum size of 7.6cm.

Aquarium Suitability

The Red Flame Scallop is considered an expert-only aquatic creature due to its specific care requirements. It is a filter feeder that requires floating micro-plankton to thrive in an aquarium setting. Adequate supplementation with phytoplankton and organic foods such as Marine Snow or Selcon is essential for its survival. Additionally, maintaining proper calcium levels, alkalinity, and water parameters free from nitrates and copper-based medications is crucial for this species.

Care and Hardiness

This species is peaceful and can coexist with other tank mates as long as they do not pose a threat. Red Flame Scallops often embed themselves in small nests made of rocks and coral debris in the wild, which may not provide sufficient protection in an aquarium. When threatened, they have a unique defense mechanism where they clap their valves together to propel themselves through the water using their tentacles.

Reef Suitability

The Red Flame Scallop is reef-compatible and will thrive best in a mature reef aquarium system. They are non-photosynthetic organisms that require a consistent supply of suitable food sources due to their filter-feeding nature. As filter feeders, they play a role in maintaining water quality in a reef environment.

Aquarium Setup

To accommodate a Red Flame Scallop in an aquarium, it is recommended to provide low lighting conditions and medium water flow. Additionally, ensuring water parameters within the ranges of pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity of 1.023-1.025, and alkalinity of 8-12 dKH is essential for their well-being. Regular supplementation with calcium, magnesium, strontium, and trace elements is necessary to support their overall health.

Behaviour

Red Flame Scallops exhibit a peaceful temperament and can be kept in groups, provided there is enough space and suitable food sources for each individual. They are not aggressive towards other tank inhabitants but rely on their unique escape mechanism when threatened.

Feeding and Diet

Being filter feeders, Red Flame Scallops primarily feed on floating micro-plankton in the water column. Supplementing their diet with phytoplankton and organic foods like Marine Snow or Selcon is crucial for their nutrition. Feeding each individual scallop separately with a pipette or straw is recommended to ensure all individuals receive adequate nutrition.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Red Flame Scallops are found embedded in small rock and coral nests along coastal areas. They are native to specific regions and require care that mimics their natural habitat to thrive in captivity. Their distribution is limited to certain marine environments where they can fulfill their unique dietary and environmental needs.
