General Description

The Panamic Arrow Crab, also known as the Spider Crab, is characterized by its long legs and arrow-shaped body and head. It can grow up to six to ten inches in size, with females being notably smaller. Typically found in reef areas with caves or crevices, this crab belongs to the majidae family and boasts a brown coloration.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered easy to care for, the Panamic Arrow Crab is a hardy and long-lived invertebrate suitable for reef aquariums. However, its semi-aggressive temperament may lead to interactions with other tank inhabitants, especially crustaceans like Banded Coral Shrimp. It is known to be a carnivorous species that feeds on a variety of meaty, flake, and tablet foods.

Care and Hardiness

This crab's hardy nature makes it a suitable choice for beginner aquarists. It thrives in water conditions that maintain a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.023-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12. Supplementing its diet with calcium, magnesium, iodine, and trace elements can further support its health and longevity.

Reef Suitability

Reef-compatible, the Panamic Arrow Crab can be housed in reef aquariums, though caution is advised due to its semi-aggressive behavior towards other tank mates. While it can help control populations of Bristle Worms, it may also prey on small, slow-moving fish within the tank.

Creating an ideal habitat for the Panamic Arrow Crab involves providing ample hiding spots like caves or crevices within the reef structure. Maintaining stable water parameters and offering a varied diet are key to promoting the well-being of this species in captivity.

Behaviour

With a semi-aggressive temperament, the Panamic Arrow Crab may exhibit territorial behaviors and potentially aggressive interactions with other crustaceans and fish in the aquarium. It is an opportunistic feeder known to scavenge for food if resources are scarce.

Feeding and Diet

As a carnivorous species, the Panamic Arrow Crab readily accepts a diet consisting of meaty foods, flakes, and tablets. Supplementing its diet with a variety of nutritional sources helps mimic its natural feeding habits and promotes overall health.

Dimorphism

Female Panamic Arrow Crabs are notably smaller than their male counterparts. Despite being known to breed in captivity, successfully rearing their larvae to maturity is challenging, and reproduction is not commonly observed in home aquariums.
