General Description

The Yellow Tilefish (Hoplolatilus luteus) belongs to the Malacanthidae family, characterized by its delicate nature and challenging care requirements. Typically reaching a maximum size of 13.0cm, these docile fish are found in the Indo-West Pacific region, primarily around the Andaman Islands, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands.

Aquarium Suitability

Due to their delicate nature and sensitivity to stress, Yellow Tilefish are best suited for experienced aquarists willing to provide the necessary preparation and extra care. They require a minimum tank size of 400 liters and are known to jump out of open aquariums, demanding a secure lid for containment. Their timidity also makes it crucial to avoid housing them with semi-aggressive or aggressive species. Instead, peaceful tankmates like Anthias, Jawfish, and small Wrasses are recommended.

Care and Hardiness

Yellow Tilefish require high water quality, including proper oxygenation and specific water conditions (pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12, SG 1.020-1.025, temperature 22.2-25.6°C). They are sensitive to transportation and acclimatization, acclimatizing best when introduced as juveniles. Offering hiding places resembling their natural habitat, with soft lighting and moonlight to prevent jumping injuries, is essential for their well-being.

Reef Suitability

Yellow Tilefish are reef-safe but may occasionally prey on small shrimps and LPS corals. They tend to thrive in coral aquaria but should be monitored in case of predatory behavior towards invertebrates.

Aquarium Setup

In captivity, Yellow Tilefish flourish in aquariums with sandy substrates, coral pieces, and secure rock formations that mimic their natural burrowing behavior. They require ample space to dig holes, at least 1.5 inches longer than their body. Optimal conditions involve dimmed lighting initially, gradually increased to normal levels, to simulate their natural habitat.

Behaviour

Known for their docile temperament, Yellow Tilefish are secretive and prefer staying close to burrows or hiding spots. They are best kept in groups of at least three to promote a sense of security and minimize stress. Additionally, feeding several times a day is recommended, especially during the initial acclimatization period.

Feeding and Diet

Yellow Tilefish thrive on a diet of small crustaceans like krill and mysis, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. They may require live food initially but can transition to frozen foods over time. Providing a diet rich in nutrients and offering ample feeding opportunities in the water column ensures their well-being.

Dimorphism

Yellow Tilefish exhibit no significant dimorphic differences between males and females within the species.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the East Indian Ocean, Australia, and the Central/West Pacific regions, Yellow Tilefish inhabit sandy and coral reef environments. They prefer areas with sufficient hiding spots and open swimming spaces, characteristic of their natural habitat in the wild.
