General Description
The Blackfin dartfish, also known as the Scissortail dartfish or Sailfin hovergoby, belongs to the Microdesmidae family, characterized by their torpedo-like shape. They originate from the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to areas like the Line and Society islands. This species can grow up to a maximum size of 14.0cm and is recognized for its striking black fins.
Aquarium Suitability
Blackfin dartfish are generally considered suitable for aquariums, particularly in setups that include peaceful fish. They are known to be docile but can feel threatened by larger, more aggressive tank mates and may require sufficient hiding spots to alleviate stress. It is advisable to introduce them in pairs, ideally a male and a female, for optimal thriving in the aquarium environment.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
With an average level of hardiness, Blackfin dartfish require a minimum tank size of 100 liters and are recommended to be kept in pairs for best results. These fish are shy and docile, making them vulnerable to more aggressive tank inhabitants. Regular feeding multiple times a day, especially during the acclimatization period, is necessary for their well-being. They prefer hiding at first when introduced to a new tank to feel secure.
Reef Suitability
Blackfin dartfish are considered reef-safe and are compatible with reef environments. They do not pose a threat to coral or other invertebrates commonly found in reef setups.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up the tank for Blackfin dartfish, it is essential to provide ample hiding spaces like 3/4" PVC pipes that lead to larger chambers with multiple exits. These fish do not dig their own holes and rely on pre-existing structures for shelter. Dimming the tank lights initially can help the dartfish acclimate peacefully to their new environment. To simulate their natural habitat, ensure water conditions fall within a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C.
Behaviour
Due to their shy nature, Blackfin dartfish may hide within the tank when feeling stressed or acclimating to a new environment. They are generally peaceful but can be intimidated by aggressive tank mates, impacting their feeding and overall well-being.
Feeding and Diet
The Blackfin dartfish's diet primarily consists of small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Feeding several times a day, especially during the initial settling period, is crucial for their nutrition and overall health.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Blackfin dartfish can be found in various regions spanning from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Line and Society islands, extending north to the Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands and south to areas like New South Wales, Lord Howe Island, and Rapa. Their natural habitat includes rocky crevices and reef outcrops where they seek shelter and food sources.
