General Description:The Lined Dartfish, also known as the Glorious dart-goby, belongs to the Microdesmidae family and is classified under the species Ptereleotris grammica. They are characterized by their torpedo-like shape and are typically found in the Indo-West Pacific region, ranging from Mauritius and the Maldives to the Solomon Islands.
Aquarium Suitability:Considered suitable with care, the Lined Dartfish requires hiding holes in the aquarium as they are unable to dig their own. Providing 3/4" PVC pipes that lead to larger chambers with multiple exits is ideal. Additionally, these fish are known to leap out of open aquariums, emphasizing the need for a secure lid.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness:With an average hardiness level, these docile fish thrive best in pairs and tend to hide initially when introduced to a new environment. They are best kept in peaceful tank setups, away from larger, aggressive fish that may outcompete them for food.
Reef Suitability:The Lined Dartfish is always reef-safe, making them an excellent addition to reef aquariums without posing a threat to corals or other invertebrates.
Aquarium Setup:For optimal care, ensure water conditions in the tank are maintained with a pH ranging from 8.1 to 8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025, and a temperature between 22.2 to 25.6°C. Providing ample hiding spots and dimming the lighting initially can help the Dartfish acclimate smoothly to its new environment.
Behaviour:These fish are known for their shy and docile nature, requiring frequent feedings several times a day, particularly when first introduced to the tank. They may hide during the acclimation period, so it is essential not to disrupt them during this phase.
Feeding and Diet:The Lined Dartfish feeds on small crustaceans such as krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton like cyclops and pods. Once they can find natural food sources in the aquarium, their feeding schedule may become less frequent.
Habitat and Distribution:In the wild, the Lined Dartfish inhabits deeper waters than most similar species, ranging from the Ryukyu Islands in the north to the Great Barrier Reef in the south, within the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific regions.
