General Description
The Blue hana goby, also known as the Thread-tail dart-goby or Filament dartfish, belongs to the Microdesmidae family, characterized by their torpedo-like shape. This species is found in the Pacific Ocean, ranging from the Philippines to the Line Islands, extending north to southern Japan and south to northwestern Australia and New South Wales. It can grow up to 12.0cm in size and is recognized for its blue hues and slender body.
Aquarium Suitability
The Blue hana goby is considered suitable for aquariums with proper care. It is known to be docile but requires hiding spaces within the tank. When housed with larger, more aggressive fish, it may struggle to feed adequately, making it ideal for peaceful tank mates. This species can thrive in pairs, typically consisting of a male and a female, and benefits from regular feeding, especially during the initial acclimation period.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
With an average hardiness level, the Blue hana goby is relatively easy to care for in aquariums. It is recommended to provide 3/4" PVC pipes within the tank for hiding, as this species does not create its own burrows. Dimming the lights upon introduction can help the goby adjust peacefully. Additionally, it is known to hide initially when introduced to a new environment, so minimal disturbance is advised during the acclimation process.
Reef Suitability
The Blue hana goby is always considered reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef aquariums. It forms symbiotic relationships with Pistol shrimp of the Alpheus genus, further enhancing the biodiversity within a reef setting.
Aquarium Setup
To create an ideal habitat for the Blue hana goby, it is important to include 3/4" PVC pipes that lead to larger chambers within the tank, allowing the fish to hide comfortably. Multiple exits in these hiding spots can provide security for the goby. Maintaining a tank temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 is recommended for this species.
Behaviour
This species of goby tends to be shy and docile, emphasizing the importance of selecting tank mates that are peaceful and non-threatening. It should be monitored closely for any signs of aggression from other fish in the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
The Blue hana goby feeds on small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Frequent feeding, particularly during the initial stages of introduction, ensures the goby receives an adequate supply of food.
Habitat and Distribution
In its natural habitat, the Blue hana goby is found in regions spanning from the East Indian Ocean to Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and various parts of the Pacific Ocean. It prefers environments with ample hiding spaces and sandy substrates where it can retreat when feeling threatened.
