General Description
The Lyre-tail dart-goby, also known as the Monofin dartfish, belongs to the family Microdesmidae (Ptereleotris). These torpedo-shaped fish are native to the Indo-Pacific region, specifically from the Seychelles and Chagos Islands to the western Pacific. Dartfish are characterized by their need for hiding spaces and are known to occupy existing holes rather than excavating their own.
Aquarium Suitability
The Lyre-tail dart-goby is considered suitable for aquariums, especially for smaller tanks with peaceful tankmates. They are relatively easy to care for, making them a popular choice for hobbyists. These fish are best kept with smaller, non-aggressive species to prevent stress and ensure adequate feeding.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
This species is docile and can be easily stressed by larger or aggressive tankmates, leading to feeding difficulties and potential health issues. Behaviour
Lyre-tail dart-gobies are known to be shy and may initially hide to acclimate to their new environment. Care should be taken to avoid startling or stressing these fish, as they are sensitive to aggressive behaviors from tankmates.
Feeding and Diet
These dart-gobies have a diet primarily consisting of small crustaceans like krill and mysis, as well as zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. Feeding should occur multiple times a day, especially during the acclimation period, to ensure they receive an adequate nutritional intake.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Lyre-tail dart-gobies can be found in the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific regions. They inhabit areas with rocky substrate and reef formations where they can seek shelter in crevices and holes.
