General Description

The Rosy Goatfish, scientifically known as Parupeneus rubescens, belongs to the Mullidae family, characterized by a unique "beard" used for foraging in sandy substrates. This species can grow up to 43.0cm in length and is primarily found in the Indo-West Pacific region, from the Red Sea to South Africa and eastward to the western Pacific.

Aquarium Suitability

The Rosy Goatfish requires experienced aquarists willing to provide meticulous care due to their tendency to suffer from malnutrition in captivity. They are known to be predators, posing a threat to small fishes, crustaceans, worms, snails, and other invertebrates. Additionally, these fish are prone to jumping out of open aquariums, necessitating secure tank lids.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Being described as docile, the Rosy Goatfish prefers a peaceful tank environment and necessitates a diet rich in variety, requiring feeding 4-5 times a day. However, they also scavenge for food in the sand, which can lead to cloudy water and depletion of natural food sources in the aquarium. Providing ample space for swimming is crucial as these fish enjoy swimming freely.

Reef Suitability

Considered reef-safe with caution, the Rosy Goatfish may be compatible with reef environments, but attention must be paid to their predatory nature, especially towards smaller invertebrates typically found in reef tanks.

Aquarium Setup

Ideal tank conditions for the Rosy Goatfish include a minimum tank size of 1000 liters with a sandy substrate and open areas for foraging. The tank should offer a mix of sand and coral gravel to mimic their natural habitat, and suitable hiding spots should be provided. Water parameters should be maintained at a pH of 8.1-8.4, dKH of 8-12, specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C.

Behaviour

Known for their shyness and docile temperament, the Rosy Goatfish should be housed with non-aggressive tank mates to prevent stress. They exhibit a curious nature, often sifting through the sand in search of food.

Feeding and Diet

Feeding the Rosy Goatfish a varied diet multiple times a day is essential for their health and well-being. Their diet should include fish, larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, small crustaceans, and zooplankton to meet their nutritional requirements adequately.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Rosy Goatfish are commonly found in the West Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Indo-West Pacific region, dwelling in sandy areas where they use their specialized appendages to search for food. Their distribution ranges from the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf southwards to South Africa and eastwards to the western Pacific, including South Africa's Southeast Atlantic coast.
