General Description:
The Snowflake Eel, scientifically known as Echidna nebulosa, belongs to the Muraenidae family. It is a calmer species of Moray eel, primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Society Islands.
Aquarium Suitability:
Considered suitable for aquariums but with caution, Snowflake Eels can be kept with fish if fed adequately. However, they may pose a threat to smaller fish and shrimps due to their predatory nature. They are known to be escape specialists, capable of lifting lids and glass covers.
Demands:
Snowflake Eels are hardy creatures, able to adapt to varying water conditions within a range of temperatures from 22.2-25.6 degrees Celsius. They require a minimum tank size of 400 liters and prefer a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Care and Hardiness:
Feeding Snowflake Eels a varied diet of fish and larger crustaceans every 3-4 days is essential for their well-being. To prevent overeating, they should be given large meals. It is advisable to secure rocks and corals in the aquarium as these eels may rearrange the substrate and objects in their habitat.
Reef Suitability:
Snowflake Eels are deemed reef-safe with caution, as they may disturb the tank's decor by rearranging rocks and sand. They require ample hiding places among live rocks to feel secure in a reef environment.
Aquarium Setup:
For a Snowflake Eel's aquarium setup, ensure there are sturdy rock formations for hiding and security. Maintain a secure lid or cover on the tank to prevent escapes. Fasten loose objects to avoid disruption from the eel's activity.
Behaviour:
These eels may exhibit aggression towards similar species, making it important to monitor tank mates closely. They have the ability to change gender from female to male as needed.
Feeding and Diet:
Snowflake Eels should be fed a varied diet of fresh, raw fish and whole crustaceans every 3-4 days. Live food may be necessary initially if they refuse frozen options. Feeding with a tweezer or moving food in front of them may stimulate their appetite.
Dimorphism:
Snowflake Eels can change gender from female to male when required. This species typically reaches a max size of 100.0cm in adulthood and needs good hiding spots among live rocks for comfort.
