General Description
The Zebra moray, scientifically known as Gymnomuraena zebra, belongs to the Muraenidae family. This species of Moray eel can reach up to 150.0cm in size and is primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region. Known for their distinctive zebra-like striped pattern, these moray eels are considered hardy and peaceful in temperament.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums with care, Zebra morays are relatively easy to keep and usually do not pose a threat to other fish in the tank. However, they are escape specialists and can easily maneuver loose tank covers and lids. It is recommended to have a secure tank setup to prevent the eel from escaping.
Care and Hardiness
Zebra morays have specific care needs, including a varied diet of raw and fresh foods such as whole shrimps or small fish. Feeding should occur every 3-4 days to prevent overeating, which can harm the eel. Providing adequate hiding places, like rocks, is crucial as these eels tend to hide initially and rearrange tank decor. They are capable of adapting to new environments but may take about a week to start feeding in a new tank.
Reef Suitability
While Zebra morays are considered reef safe with caution, larger species may require large tanks with other big fish. They can be compatible with reef aquariums that have appropriate hiding spaces and secure surroundings to prevent any damage to corals.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up an aquarium for Zebra morays requires fastening rocks and corals securely to prevent the eel from moving them. A tank size of at least 1000 liters is recommended due to their potential size. The water conditions should have a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, pH between 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity levels of 1.020-1.025.
Behaviour
Zebra morays are known to nibble on sea urchins and consume snails and crustaceans, posing a threat to these smaller tank mates. They have a peaceful temperament but can exhibit territorial behaviors and rearrange rocks and sand in the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
These eels should be fed a varied diet of fish and larger crustaceans every 3-4 days. If they are reluctant to eat frozen foods initially, live prey like fish or shrimp can be offered to entice them. Providing a balanced diet is essential for their overall health.
Habitat and Distribution
Zebra morays are found in the Red Sea and East Africa, extending to the Society Islands, Ryukyu, and Hawaiian islands. They are also present in the Eastern Central Pacific, from southern Baja California, Mexico, to northern Colombia. In their natural habitat, they inhabit reef environments where they can hide and hunt effectively.
