General Description
The Goldentail moray, scientifically known as Gymnothorax miliaris, belongs to the Muraenidae family. These eels are typically brown, but some individuals may exhibit a yellow hue. They are a hardy species found in regions such as the West Indian Ocean, The Mexican Gulf, and the West Atlantic. With a maximum size of 70.0cm, they require a minimum tank size of 800 liters.
Aquarium Suitability
The Goldentail moray is considered suitable for aquariums with caution. They are known to be escape specialists, capable of moving loose lids and glass covers. Their habitat should include ample hiding spaces among live rocks, as they tend to rearrange rocks and sand. It's essential to secure rocks to prevent toppling and ensure the eel can hide its full length between them.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Goldentail morays have specific care requirements, needing to be fed a large meal every 3-4 days. Overfeeding can be detrimental to their health. They prefer a diet of varied raw or fresh foods, including whole shrimps or small fish. Captive individuals may take up to a week to acclimate to aquarium feeding, often responding well to live fish or shrimp. The species is nocturnal and more active when light levels are low.
Reef Suitability
While Goldentail morays are considered reef safe with caution, larger individuals may not be suitable for reef tanks due to their size. Some smaller species may coexist with large fish in reef environments, provided they have ample space to move around.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up an aquarium for Goldentail morays involves ensuring secure rock formations and crevices for hiding. Fastening rocks and corals in place can prevent accidental toppling. A tank size of at least 800 liters is recommended, with stable water conditions including pH levels of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
Behaviour
Goldentail morays may exhibit aggressive tendencies towards similar species. They have a reputation for rearranging their environment, moving loose objects, and digging up substrates. Their strength and escape abilities should not be underestimated, requiring a tightly secured tank to prevent escapes.
Feeding and Diet
These eels primarily feed on fish and larger crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. Feeding should occur every 3-4 days, with a focus on providing a varied diet of raw or fresh foods. Live feeding options can entice individuals that initially refuse frozen foods.
Habitat and Distribution
Goldentail morays are native to regions like the West Indian Ocean, The Mexican Gulf, and the West Atlantic. They prefer rocky habitats with ample crevices for hiding and exploring. Understanding their natural environment is crucial for replicating suitable conditions in an aquarium setup.
