General Description

The Undulated Moray, scientifically known as Gymnothorax undulatus, belongs to the Muraenidae family. These predatory fish primarily feed on fish and crustaceans and should be fed every 3-4 days to prevent overeating. They are known to rearrange rocks and sand in their environment and require ample hiding spots within live rocks to feel secure.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered suitable for special aquarium setups, Undulated Morays require tanks of at least 1500 liters and are hardy creatures. They can be aggressive towards similar species, posing a threat to larger fish and smaller crustaceans. It is advisable to take precautions against their escape abilities as they can manipulate loose tank lids and covers easily.

Care and Hardiness

Undulated Morays are hardy creatures with a slightly poisonous bite. They necessitate regular feeding, sufficient hiding places, and ample space in the aquarium to somewhat mitigate their aggressive behavior. Care should be taken while choosing tankmates, as they can exhibit aggression towards peaceful or docile species.

Reef suitability for Undulated Morays is labeled as "reef safe with caution." While some smaller species can adapt to reef environments, larger species require large tanks with other significant fish. Securely fastening rocks and corals in the tank is essential to prevent the Morays from escaping.

The substrate and rocks should be secured to prevent toppling due to the Moray's rearranging tendencies. Maintaining water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness level of 8-12 is crucial for their well-being.

Behaviour

Undulated Morays exhibit aggressive behavior towards other fish, especially those of similar species. They can also be escape specialists, requiring secure tank closures to prevent them from exiting. Additionally, they may bite if provoked, including biting people, and have a tendency to rearrange the tank environment.

Feeding and Diet

Feeding Undulated Morays a varied diet of raw and fresh foods like whole shrimps or small fish is essential. They should be offered large meals every 3-4 days to prevent overeating. If they do not consume frozen foods initially, live fish or shrimp can be offered to entice them to feed.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Undulated Morays are found in areas ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to French Polynesia, extending north to southern Japan and the Hawaiian Islands, and south to the southern Great Barrier Reef. They are also present in the Eastern Central Pacific, specifically in countries like Costa Rica and Panama.
