General Description
The Buffalo trunkfish (Lactophrys trigonus) belongs to the Ostraciidae family, known for their square shape and unique swimming style. Typically found in the West Indian Ocean, The Mexican Gulf, West Atlantic, and the Mediterranean Sea, these fish can grow up to 55.0cm in size.
Aquarium Suitability
The Buffalo trunkfish requires experience, preparation, and extra care if kept in an aquarium. They are not considered reef safe and can pose a threat to various invertebrates due to their diet, which includes larger crustaceans, macroalgae, microalgae, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Exact hardiness information is unknown, but these fish are known to release a toxin from their skin when highly stressed or dying, which can be lethal to other aquatic life in the tank. Keeping them in a very large aquarium of at least 2000 liters is recommended when fully grown.
Reef Suitability
Buffalo trunkfish are not reef safe and should be kept with caution in reef tanks due to their potential threat to coral polyps and other reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Buffalo trunkfish, it is essential to provide a spacious environment with gentle water circulation. Maintaining water parameters within the following ranges is crucial: pH of 8.1-8.4, KH of 8-12, specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and temperature between 22.2-25.6°C.
Behaviour
The temperament of Buffalo trunkfish is unknown; however, they are known for their unique personality and square-shaped body, which endears them to many aquarists.
Feeding and Diet
Their diet consists of larger crustaceans, macroalgae like seaweed or nori, microalgae such as spirulina, and other small invertebrates. Feeding them a varied diet rich in proteins and vegetation is essential for their well-being.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Buffalo trunkfish are found in the warm waters of the West Indian Ocean, the Mexican Gulf, the West Atlantic, and the Mediterranean Sea. Their natural habitat includes coral reefs and rocky areas where they forage for food.
