General Description

The Humpback turretfish, scientifically known as Tetrosomus gibbosus, belongs to the Ostraciidae family, characterized by their square shape and unique way of swimming. This species can grow up to 30.0cm in size and is native to the Indo-West Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea to southern Japan and northern Australia. They have also been observed in the southeastern Mediterranean after entering through the Suez Canal.

Aquarium Suitability

The Humpback turretfish is considered suitable for aquariums with the proper care and attention due to its demands and potential risks. It is not recommended for reef tanks due to its behavior towards shrimps, crabs, and other small crustaceans, making it a threat to such tank inhabitants. Furthermore, their toxic skin secretes a poison under stress or if they die, which can prove fatal to other aquatic life in the aquarium.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Although the hardiness of this species is listed as unknown, the Humpback turretfish requires specific care and attention. It is a fastidious feeder, consuming larger crustaceans and other invertebrates. Care must be taken to provide a varied diet as they eat slowly and are selective feeders. Good hiding spots, like live rocks, are essential as they require shelter and may struggle in strong currents due to poor maneuverability, risking getting stuck in pump inlets.

Reef Suitability

The Humpback turretfish is not reef safe due to its predatory nature towards smaller crustaceans, shrimps, and crabs. This behavior makes them unsuitable for reef aquarium setups where delicate invertebrates are commonly housed.

Aquarium Setup

To accommodate the Humpback turretfish in an aquarium, a minimum tank size of 2000 liters is recommended. The water conditions should have a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity between 1.020-1.025, a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12. Gentle water circulation is preferred, and attention should be paid to prevent the fish from getting stuck in pump inlets.

Behaviour

The Humpback turretfish is described as exhibiting a fun and interesting personality, adding liveliness to the aquarium. However, their behavior towards smaller tank mates should be carefully monitored to prevent any aggression or harm.

Feeding and Diet

In captivity, Humpback turretfish feed on small crustaceans such as krill, mysis, and artemia, along with zooplankton like cyclops and pods. As slow and selective feeders, offering a diverse diet to meet their nutritional needs is crucial for their health and well-being.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, the Red Sea, Indonesia, New Zealand, and the Central/West Pacific, the Humpback turretfish inhabits shallow coastal waters with access to rocky shelters and hiding spots in the wild. Their distribution ranges from East Africa to Indonesia, with established populations found as far north as southern Japan and south to northern Australia.
