General Description
The Biota Marine Betta, also known as the Comet, is a captivating marine fish characterized by its deep black coloration with white speckles and spots. In youth, they display the iconic "eye spot" near the tail section. These miniature versions of adult Marine Bettas are stunning additions to aquariums.
Aquarium Suitability
The Biota Marine Betta, a carnivorous species, is considered easy to care for and is suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists. It is notably hardy and disease-resistant, thriving in home aquarium conditions. Their peaceful temperament makes them a great choice for community tanks, but caution is advised due to their predatory nature towards small fish and shrimp.
Care and Hardiness
With a maximum size of 20.3 cm, these Marine Bettas require a minimum tank size of 189 liters. They prefer water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a dKH of 8-12, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
Reef Suitability
While the Biota Marine Betta is reported to be reef-compatible, they are not commonly kept in reef-style aquariums due to their predatory behavior. However, they can coexist with corals and anemones.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up the aquarium for a Biota Marine Betta should include ample hiding places to provide shelter from bright lighting, as they are nocturnal creatures. Keeping the tank well-aerated and maintaining stable water parameters are key to their well-being.
Behaviour
These fish have a unique "head down" position when swimming, resembling a moray eel to deter predators. They are more active during dusk and exhibit a peaceful temperament in community tanks.
Feeding and Diet
As carnivores, Biota Marine Bettas thrive on a diet of prepared marine foods such as Brine Shrimp, Mysis Shrimp, quality marine pellets, and flake foods. Ensuring a varied diet is essential for their health.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Marine Bettas can be found in rocky crevasses at depths of up to 45 meters. Their natural habitat influences their preference for ample hiding spots in aquarium setups.
