General Description
The Banded Angelfish, scientifically known as Apolemichthys arcuatus, belongs to the Pomacanthidae family. These medium-sized Angelfish vary in hardiness and suitability for aquariums, with some being more delicate and requiring specific food. They are generally less aggressive compared to other Angelfish species and are not known to be reef-safe due to their tendency to target soft corals and LPS.
Aquarium Suitability
The Banded Angelfish is recommended for experienced aquarists due to its delicate nature and specialized food requirements for optimal survival. Acclimating them while young is crucial, as very small individuals can be extremely fragile. They are not suited for coral aquariums due to their inclination to nibble at clams, including Tridacna species, and may require hiding places in the aquarium, especially when newly introduced.
Care and Hardiness
This species is considered delicate, and acclimatizes best when introduced at a young age. They can be initially shy in new environments, might exhibit aggression towards similar species, and prefer dimmed light initially before gradually increasing to normal levels. During transportation and acclimatization, they are very sensitive and require extra care to ensure their well-being.
Reef Suitability
The Banded Angelfish is not reef-safe and may pose a threat to soft corals and LPS in a reef environment. It is advised to choose corals carefully when keeping them in a mixed coral aquarium. Some suitable coral options include Hammer corals, Bubble corals, Star polyps, and Disc anemones, while most SPS corals can be kept with caution.
Aquarium Setup
To set up an aquarium for Banded Angelfish, it is crucial to provide hiding places, maintain optimum water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C. A minimum tank size of 800 liters is recommended, with the inclusion of various sized Angelfish that are not too similar to reduce aggression.
Behaviour
These Angelfish might exhibit aggression towards similar species, especially during the introduction phase. They can be less aggressive than other Angelfish species but still require careful consideration when choosing tank mates and order of introduction to minimize territorial conflicts.
Feeding and Diet
The Banded Angelfish primarily feed on sponges and require a varied diet to maintain good health. Providing high-quality water and a diverse diet can help reduce stress, especially during periods of introducing new fish. Maintaining excellent water quality is essential to prevent stress-related issues.
Dimorphism
Information regarding dimorphism or captive reproduction of the Banded Angelfish species is not provided.
Habitat and Distribution
These Angelfish are found in the Eastern Central Pacific around Hawaiian and Johnston Islands. They prefer habitats with specific conditions and require specialized care in aquarium settings to thrive effectively.
