General Description

The Pygmy Yellowtail Angelfish, scientifically known as Centropyge flavicauda, belongs to the family Pomacanthidae. These vibrant Dwarf Angelfish are renowned for their striking colors and typically grow to around 10 cm, with some individuals reaching up to 18 cm. They are not considered reef safe due to their tendency to feed on coral mucus, which can be detrimental to certain corals like LPS, Zoanthids, and clams. Their diet mainly consists of microalgae and detritus, with some species also consuming green hair algae and other vegetable matters.

Aquarium Suitability (Suitable with Care)

The Pygmy Yellowtail Angelfish is suitable for aquariums, but careful consideration is needed due to their potential aggression towards other fish. It is recommended to keep them with species that can withstand their aggressive behavior. Regular feeding, ample hiding spots, and sufficient space can help mitigate their aggressive tendencies to some extent. They are known to nibble at clams, including Tridacna species.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

These Angelfish are considered hardy and can thrive in well-established aquariums with sufficient algae for grazing. It is crucial to provide them with a well-maintained environment where they can feed on algae from rocks and stones. Maintaining high water quality and offering a varied diet that includes microalgae like Spirulina is essential for their well-being.

Reef Suitability

While labeled as "Reef safe with luck," there is always a risk when adding Dwarf Angelfish to a reef tank due to their coral-nibbling behavior. Some individuals might spare certain corals like Hammer corals, Bubble corals, Star polyps, Disc anemones, and some SPS corals. However, caution is advised when integrating them into a reef setup.

Aquarium Setup

Creating a suitable aquarium setup for Pygmy Yellowtail Angelfish involves providing numerous hiding places, especially among live rocks. It is crucial to have a well-structured tank with ample space and hiding spots to reduce aggression among tankmates. Additionally, maintaining specific water parameters within the ranges of pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C is vital for their overall health.

Behaviour

These Angelfish species can exhibit aggressive behavior towards other tank inhabitants, particularly peaceful or docile species. Establishing a pair (one male and one female) or having one male with multiple females tends to work best for minimizing aggression within the group. They require adequate space and hiding locations to maintain a harmonious environment.

Feeding and Diet

Pygmy Yellowtail Angelfish primarily feed on small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, along with microalgae and detritus. Supplementing their diet with Spirulina, nori, and fresh vegetable matter can help meet their nutritional needs. Maintaining a balanced and varied diet is crucial for their overall health and vitality.

Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction

These Angelfish species can undergo gender changes from female to male, with females transitioning when a male is required within the group. Understanding their mating behaviors and reproductive processes can be essential for successful breeding in a controlled aquarium environment.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the Central/West Pacific region, Pygmy Yellowtail Angelfish are commonly found in reef environments. They inhabit areas with ample hiding spots among live rocks and feed on algae and small crustaceans in their natural habitat. Understanding their natural habitat and dietary preferences is crucial for recreating a suitable environment in captivity.
