General Description
The Scribbled Angelfish is part of the Chaetodontoplus genus, reaching a length of up to 35 cm and displaying vibrant colors. Known for their peaceful demeanor compared to other angelfish species, they are still advised to be kept in larger aquariums due to their potential territorial behavior.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquarium life, the Scribbled Angelfish should have algae as a part of its diet, alongside frozen foods. These fish are generally less aggressive but should be housed in spacious tanks, especially when kept in multiples. They are not commonly regarded as reef-safe due to their tendency to disturb certain coral species.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Requiring a high level of water quality is essential for the well-being of the Scribbled Angelfish. They are known to be average in terms of hardiness, susceptible to Marine Ich when stressed, and will acclimatize best when introduced to the aquarium at a young age. Frequent feeding, a varied diet, and ample space for swimming are essential for their care.
Reef Suitability
While potentially compatible with a reef environment with luck, the Scribbled Angelfish may not be the best choice for a reef tank due to their inclination to disturb certain coral species like LPS and tubeworms.
Aquarium Setup
To cater to the needs of the Scribbled Angelfish, setting up the aquarium should include good hiding spots among live rocks, ensuring enough space for swimming, and providing a well-established environment with algae for grazing. It is recommended to supplement their diet with algae-rich foods if the natural algae in the tank is insufficient.
Behaviour
Although mostly peaceful, the Scribbled Angelfish can exhibit aggression towards similar species. They may initially be shy and refuse to eat when introduced, but tend to acclimatize over time. These fish enjoy swimming and require sufficient space in the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding the Scribbled Angelfish a varied diet that includes larger crustaceans, macroalgae, microalgae, and small crustaceans is crucial to their nutritional needs. Their primary food source should be algae-based to maintain a healthy immune system.
Dimorphism
The Scribbled Angelfish is known to be hermaphroditic, capable of changing gender from female to male as needed. Reproduction in captivity might be achievable, although specific details of captive breeding are not covered.
Habitat and Distribution
These fish are found in the Indo-West Pacific region, particularly in northern Australia and parts of Indonesia, extending southward to Lord Howe Island. Their natural habitat includes coral-rich environments where they can graze algae and seek shelter among rocks.
