General Description

The Regal angelfish, scientifically known as Pygoplites diacanthus, is the sole species in the Pygoplites genus. Renowned for its stunning and vibrant colors, this species displays shyness, particularly in brightly lit aquariums. Belonging to the Pomacanthidae family, which is characterized by its colorful and striking appearance, the Regal angelfish hails from the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to as far as the Tuamoto Islands and the Great Barrier Reef.

Aquarium enthusiasts interested in keeping the Regal angelfish need to be aware that it is a delicate species with demanding care requirements. Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Due to its high demands for water quality, the Regal angelfish thrives in well-oxygenated environments. This species requires a varied diet, including live Mysis shrimp, fresh mussels, Spirulina, or nori seaweed. Being sensitive during transportation and acclimatization, providing a well-established aquarium with sufficient hiding spaces is crucial. Regular feeding several times a day, especially during the acclimatization period, is necessary to cater to the nutritional needs of this delicate species.

Reef Suitability

The Regal angelfish is not reef safe as it may nibble on clams, including Tridacna species, and can potentially harm corals. Due to their inclination towards consuming soft corals and LPS, it is recommended to exercise caution when housing them in a coral aquarium. While certain corals like Hammer corals, Bubble corals, Star polyps, and Disc anemones can coexist with these angelfish, SPS corals are more likely to be left unharmed.

Aquarium Setup

Creating an ideal aquarium setup for the Regal angelfish involves providing ample space for swimming and multiple hiding places like live rocks. A well-maintained tank with sufficient algae for grazing is beneficial. To accommodate this species appropriately, a minimum tank size of 900 liters (240 gallons) is recommended, with a focus on ensuring pristine water conditions.

Behaviour

Known for its shy and docile nature, the Regal angelfish may exhibit aggression towards similar fish species or in cramped environments. Care must be taken when introducing them to avoid conflicts. Ensuring a harmonious tank environment with carefully selected tank mates is essential for reducing aggression levels.

Feeding and Diet

A varied diet consisting of larger crustaceans, macroalgae, microalgae, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans is essential for the nutritional well-being of the Regal angelfish. Regular feeding routines and supplementing with algae-rich foods like Spirulina are vital for their health and vitality in captivity.

Dimorphism and Habitat Distribution

Dimorphic characteristics of the Regal angelfish include the ability to change gender from female to male when required. Found in the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, the Red Sea, Indonesia, and various Pacific regions, this species occupies habitats ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Ogasawara Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, preferring deep waters in the wild.
