General Description
The Cortez Angelfish, scientifically known as Pomacanthus zonipectus, exhibits a striking variation in coloration as it matures. During its juvenile stage, it displays a dark black hue with vibrant yellow and blue semi-circular striping that fans out from the tail region. Upon reaching adulthood, this angelfish transforms into a predominantly blue color with a lightly speckled mid-section and a distinctive vertical yellow band just behind the head. The elongated dorsal fin features shades of green-blue, complementing the predominantly blue head with another yellow vertical stripe situated right behind the eye.
Aquarium Suitability
Ideally suited for larger aquariums, the Cortez Angelfish necessitates a tank capacity of at least 250 gallons. It should be the sole angelfish resident in the aquarium, even during its juvenile phase. This species is not particularly well-suited for reef tanks, as it feeds on sponges and has a tendency to consume both stony and soft corals, including clam mantles.
Care and Hardiness
Categorized as a moderately demanding species, the Cortez Angelfish thrives with appropriate care in a well-maintained aquarium environment. It fares well within water conditions showcasing a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a carbonate hardness (KH) level between 8-12, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
Reef Suitability
While the Cortez Angelfish can exist in a reef setting, it does so with caution due to its dietary preferences that may pose a threat to certain sessile invertebrates such as corals.
Aquarium Setup
To create a suitable habitat for the Cortez Angelfish, a well-equipped aquarium featuring live rock formations for hiding spots and swimming space is recommended. Adequate water movement, efficient filtration, and regular water parameter monitoring are essential for maintaining optimal conditions.
Behaviour
Exhibiting a semi-aggressive temperament, the Cortez Angelfish can showcase territorial behavior towards its own species and other tank mates. Providing suitable hiding places can help mitigate potential aggression issues.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, the Cortez Angelfish should be offered a varied diet consisting of Spirulina, marine algae, shrimp, and other meaty foods. Additionally, high-quality angelfish preparations enriched with sponges are recommended to meet its nutritional requirements.
Habitat and Distribution
The Cortez Angelfish is native to the waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, particularly found along the coastlines of Mexico. It inhabits rocky reef environments with ample crevices and caves for shelter.
