General Description:
The Yellowtail Sergeant, scientifically known as Abudefduf notatus, is a species of fish belonging to the Pomacentridae family. These fish are part of the Abudefduf genus, also known as Sergeant Major fish, and are recognized for their tendency to exhibit aggressive behavior, particularly as they grow larger compared to other fish in the family.
Aquarium Suitability:
The Yellowtail Sergeant is classified as suitable for aquarium keeping with caution due to its aggressive nature towards other fish species. When housed with more peaceful or docile species, extra care should be taken. Providing regular feeding, ample hiding spots, and sufficient space within the aquarium can help mitigate aggression to some extent.
Demands and Care:
This species of fish is considered hardy, adapting well to aquarium conditions within the recommended water parameters. They thrive in water with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) ranging from 8 to 12.
Reef Suitability:
Yellowtail Sergeants are known to be consistently reef-safe, making them a great addition to a reef aquarium setup. Care should be taken when introducing them to a reef environment to ensure compatibility with other inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup:
When setting up an aquarium for Yellowtail Sergeants, it is advisable to provide plenty of open swimming space along with numerous hiding places to allow them to establish territories. Ensuring a minimum tank size of 600 liters is recommended to accommodate their territorial nature.
Behaviour:
Yellowtail Sergeants display aggressive behavior, particularly towards other fish species. Their territorial instincts can become more evident as they grow and establish their space within the aquarium environment.
Feeding and Diet:
In terms of diet, Yellowtail Sergeants are primarily microalgae feeders and can be supplemented with small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia. Feeding them a diverse diet enriched with microalgae helps promote their overall health and vitality.
Habitat and Distribution:
These fish are native to the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific regions. In the wild, they are found in the waters stretching from East Africa to Transkei, South Africa, and extending north to southern Japan and New Caledonia.
