General Description
The Indo-Pacific sergeant, also known as the five-banded damselfish or Sergeant Major, belongs to the Abudefduf genus. These fish are recognized for their aggressive behavior as they can become very territorial over time and grow relatively large compared to other species in their family.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable with care, the Indo-Pacific sergeant demands adequate feeding, plenty of hiding spots, and ample space in the aquarium. They can exhibit extreme aggression towards other fish, especially peaceful or docile species. Keeping them in groups of five or more individuals can help alleviate some aggressive tendencies.
Care and Hardiness
Known for being hardy, these fish can thrive in aquarium environments with proper care and maintenance. They prefer a well-established tank with stable water conditions, including a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
Reef Suitability
The Indo-Pacific sergeant is considered always reef-safe, making them an excellent choice for reef aquariums. They coexist well with reef structures, but their aggressive behavior might escalate if other fish encroach on their territory.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up the aquarium for Indo-Pacific sergeants should include providing ample hiding places and open swimming areas. A tank size of at least 600 liters is recommended to accommodate their territorial nature. Maintaining stable water parameters and regular feeding schedules are essential for their well-being.
Behaviour
These fish are known for their aggressive temperament towards other species, especially during territorial disputes. Observing social interactions within a group of Indo-Pacific sergeants can provide insight into their hierarchical structure and behavior dynamics.
Feeding and Diet
Indo-Pacific sergeants primarily feed on microalgae like spirulina, small crustaceans such as krill and mysis, and zooplankton like Cyclops and pods. Offering a varied diet multiple times a day ensures their nutritional needs are met in captivity.
Habitat and Distribution
Indo-Pacific sergeants are native to the Red Sea and extend across the eastern Africa region to the Line and Tuamoto islands. They can be found as far north as southern Japan and south to Australia. In the aquarium, replicating their natural habitat with appropriate hiding spots and swimming areas is crucial for their well-being.
