General Description
The Golden damselfish, scientifically known as Amblyglyphidodon aureus, belongs to the Pomacentridae family. These fish are typically found in the Western Pacific, ranging from the Andaman Sea to places like Fiji, the Ryukyu Islands, and New Caledonia. They have a maximum size of 12.0cm and are known for their golden coloration.
Aquarium Suitability
Golden damselfish are considered suitable for most aquarium setups as they are hardy and can thrive in a tank of at least 300 liters. However, they are best kept alone unless in a very large aquarium due to their territorial and aggressive nature towards other fish species. They require plenty of hiding places, like live rocks, within the tank.
Care and Hardiness
These damselfish are known to be hardy creatures, thriving in a range of water conditions commonly found in the East Indian Ocean and Central/West Pacific regions. They prefer a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C. Providing them with a varied diet of small crustaceans like krill and mysis is recommended for their overall well-being.
Reef Suitability
While Golden damselfish are considered reef-safe with caution, their aggressive behavior towards other fish makes them less ideal for a peaceful reef setup. They may disturb other tank mates if they encroach on their territory.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up a tank for Golden damselfish should include ample hiding spots among live rocks to cater to their territorial nature. Maintaining stable water parameters within the recommended ranges and providing a suitable diet are crucial for their health and longevity in a captive environment.
Behaviour
Golden damselfish are territorial by nature and tend to assert dominance in their designated space within the aquarium. They can exhibit aggression towards most approaching fishes, especially if they feel their territory is being encroached upon.
Feeding and Diet
To ensure the well-being of Golden damselfish, it is essential to feed them a diet rich in small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia. Offering a varied diet multiple times a day can help keep these fish healthy and vibrant.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Golden damselfish can be found in various locations, including the East Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific. They prefer areas with abundant hiding spots and may exhibit aggressive behavior to defend their territory.
