General Description
The Bicolor Chromis, also known as Whitetail Chromis, is a member of the Pomacentridae family. Typically seen in large shoals in fish stores, they may cease schooling once sexually mature, displaying more aggression towards each other. Compared to other Pomacentridae species, Chromis are relatively peaceful fish, presenting shiny blue and green color nuances.
Aquarium Suitability
The Bicolor Chromis is suitable for most aquariums, with a hardiness classification of "Hardy." They thrive best in pairs or shoals, ideally with one male to five or more females. These fish are known to be aggressive towards similar species, requiring careful monitoring when housed together.
Demands
Care and Hardiness: This species must be fed multiple times a day, with a preference for a varied diet including microalgae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. They are sensitive during transportation and acclimatizing to new aquarium environments. Providing ample hiding spots is essential, especially during the initial introduction to the tank.
Reef Suitability
Bicolor Chromis are always reef safe, making them an excellent choice for reef aquariums. They may exhibit increased aggression when guarding their eggs or establishing territories within the reef environment.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate Bicolor Chromis, a minimum tank size of 300 liters is recommended. Ideal water conditions include a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025. Maintaining a carbonate hardness (KH) level between 8-12 is essential for their well-being.
Behaviour
Initially, these fish may swim in shoals upon introduction to the tank, but this behavior may decrease over time as they establish territories. They can exhibit aggression towards one another, especially in smaller shoals. Providing ample space and hiding spots can help mitigate aggression.
Feeding and Diet
The Bicolor Chromis thrives on a diet that includes microalgae (e.g., spirulina), small crustaceans (such as krill, mysis, artemia), and zooplankton (e.g., cyclops, pods). It's crucial to ensure they receive regular feedings to maintain their health and vitality.
Habitat and Distribution
These fish are native to the Pacific Ocean, specifically found in regions ranging from Christmas Island and northwestern Australia in the eastern Indian Ocean to the Line and Tuamoto islands. Their natural habitat includes coral reefs where they can seek shelter in stony corals like Acropora or occasionally in anemones.
