General Description
Rolland's demoiselle, scientifically known as Chrysiptera rollandi, is a species of Damselfish that belongs to the Pomacentridae family. It is characterized by its vibrant colors, with some individuals exhibiting shades of blue and green, making them a visually appealing addition to aquariums.
Aquarium Suitability
This species is considered suitable for most aquarium setups, as they are hardy and can adapt well to captive environments. They can coexist in pairs if introduced simultaneously and provided with ample hiding places, particularly among live rocks. It is advised to keep them in a spacious tank to prevent aggression issues.
Demands, Care and Hardiness
Rolland's demoiselle is known for its hardy nature, making it a suitable option for beginner and experienced aquarists alike. They thrive in water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Reef Suitability
This species is classified as always reef safe, making them ideal for reef aquarium setups. However, they can display territorial behavior, especially when nesting or protecting eggs. Providing ample space and suitable hiding spots can help mitigate any aggression they may exhibit.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Rolland's demoiselle, it is essential to include live rocks with plenty of crevices for hiding. A tank size of at least 150 liters is recommended to accommodate their territorial tendencies. Additionally, maintaining a varied diet consisting of microalgae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton is crucial for their overall health and well-being.
Behaviour
Rolland's demoiselle may exhibit aggressive behavior, especially towards other fish that encroach upon their territory. However, when kept in a suitable environment with adequate space and hiding spots, they can coexist peacefully, particularly when maintained in pairs.
Feeding and Diet
These damselfish have a recommended diet that includes microalgae such as spirulina, small crustaceans like krill and mysis shrimp, and zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. Feeding them a varied diet multiple times a day will help mimic their natural feeding habits and ensure their nutritional needs are met.
Habitat and Distribution
Rolland's demoiselle is commonly found in the Eastern Indian Ocean and Western Pacific regions, ranging from the Andaman Sea to the Loyalty Islands. Their distribution extends north to the Philippines and south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia, with recent sightings recorded in Tonga. They prefer areas with ample hiding spots among rocks and corals in their natural habitat.
