General Description
The Chrysiptera unimaculata, commonly known as Onespot Demoiselle or One-spot Damselfish, belongs to the Pomacentridae family. These Damselfish are known for their vibrant colors, with some species being peaceful while others can display high levels of aggression towards intruders.
Aquarium Suitability
The Onespot Demoiselle is suitable for most aquarium setups but should be housed alone due to their territorial nature. They thrive in tanks with ample hiding spots such as live rocks and prefer not to have other members of their species present.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Considered hardy, Onespot Demoiselles require a minimum tank size of 300 liters. They prefer water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness of 8-12 dKH.
Reef Suitability
Onespot Demoiselles are deemed reef-safe and can coexist harmoniously within a reef setup.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Onespot Demoiselles, it is crucial to include ample hiding places like live rocks to cater to their territorial behavior. The tank should provide a territory for each fish, ensuring a stress-free environment.
Behaviour
These Damselfish exhibit aggressive behavior towards other species, particularly when approached near their territory. They are best kept without other fish of their kind unless in a very large tank that allows for individual territories.
Feeding and Diet
The Onespot Demoiselle's diet primarily consists of small crustaceans such as krill, mysis, artemia, zooplankton like Cyclops and pods, macroalgae, and microalgae like spirulina. It is essential to offer multiple feedings throughout the day to meet their dietary needs.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the Indo-West Pacific region, Onespot Demoiselles are found from the Red Sea and East Africa to Fiji, extending north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to the southern Great Barrier Reef. They prefer habitats with plenty of hiding spots and are commonly distributed across various locations, including the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, The Red Sea, Indonesia, and the East Pacific to the Central/West Pacific.
