General Description
Yellowtail dascyllus, scientifically known as Dascyllus flavicaudus, belongs to the Pomacentridae family. These fish have a resemblance to chromis in behavior but are not as vividly colored. They can display aggression towards other species, especially when defending their territory.
Aquarium Suitability
Yellowtail dascyllus are considered suitable for most aquarium setups. They can be kept in shoals if provided with ample space and hiding spots among stony corals. It is recommended to keep them in pairs or in small groups with a male to multiple females.
Care and Hardiness
These fish are known for their hardiness and can adapt well to aquarium life. They require good hiding places, such as live rocks, to feel secure. Yellowtail dascyllus prefer a stable water environment with parameters like pH levels of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C.
Reef Suitability
Yellowtail dascyllus are reef-safe and can thrive in a reef aquarium setting. However, they may exhibit aggression towards other fish species that encroach on their territory, particularly when they have hiding spots within the reef structure.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Yellowtail dascyllus, it is crucial to provide ample space for swimming and suitable hiding spots. Live rocks and stony corals with branches are essential for creating territories and refuge areas for these fish. Maintaining stable water parameters and a well-established environment is key to their thriving.
Behaviour
Yellowtail dascyllus exhibit territorial behavior and can be aggressive towards most approaching fishes, especially when establishing their territory. They tend to swim in shoals initially, but may display aggression towards each other as they settle in the aquarium environment.
Feeding and Diet
In captivity, Yellowtail dascyllus should be fed a varied diet that includes microalgae like spirulina, small crustaceans such as krill and mysis, and zooplankton like cyclops and pods. Regular feedings, multiple times a day, are recommended to ensure their nutritional needs are met.
Habitat and Distribution
Yellowtail dascyllus are native to the Eastern Central Pacific, specifically found in regions including the Society Islands, Tuamoto Islands, Pitcairn Group, and Rapa. They inhabit areas with stony corals and branches where they can seek shelter and establish territories.
