General Description
The Marginate Dascyllus, scientifically known as Dascyllus marginatus, belongs to the Pomacentridae family and is similar to chromis in behavior but is not as vibrant in coloration. These fish can display varying levels of aggression towards other species, more so than chromis, although some individuals can be relatively peaceful given the right conditions. They are known to thrive in shoals when there is ample space and stony corals with branches for hiding.
Aquarium Suitability
The Marginate Dascyllus is suitable for most aquarium setups and can be kept as a pair or in a shoal, ideally consisting of one male to five or more females. However, they can exhibit aggression towards each other, especially in smaller groups, which may diminish over time. It's essential to provide adequate space to prevent aggressive behavior.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
This species is considered hardy, making them relatively easy to care for in aquarium settings. They prefer to hide amongst stony corals, such as Acropora corals, and appreciate having other hiding spots within the tank. The Marginate Dascyllus can change gender from female to male, ensuring the maintenance of a balanced shoal.
Reef Suitability
The Marginate Dascyllus is deemed reef safe, making them a suitable choice for reef aquariums. They are known to thrive in a reef environment as long as there are sufficient hiding spots among the corals.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Marginate Dascyllus, it is crucial to provide ample space and stony corals with branching structures for them to hide in. Additionally, ensure the tank has appropriate water parameters, including a temperature range between 22.2-25.6 degrees Celsius, a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Behaviour
These fish exhibit schooling behavior, often swimming in shoals when introduced to a new environment. However, some aquarists have noted that over time, the fish may become territorial and aggressive towards one another, particularly in confined spaces.
Feeding and Diet
The diet of Marginate Dascyllus should consist of microalgae like spirulina, small crustaceans such as krill and mysis, and zooplankton like cyclops and pods. Feeding them multiple times a day with a variety of foods will help ensure their health and vitality.
Dimorphism
The Marginate Dascyllus can change gender from female to male as needed. In a shoal, if a male is required, a female will transition to a male role. This unique ability allows for natural gender balance within the group.
Habitat and Distribution
These fish are primarily found in the Western Indian Ocean, specifically in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Oman, and possibly along the coast between these regions. They prefer habitats with branching stony corals for shelter and hiding, reflecting their behavior in aquarium settings.
