General Description
Dascyllus reticulatus, commonly known as the Two Stripe Damselfish, belongs to the Pomacentridae family. It shares behavioral similarities with chromis but lacks their vivid coloration. These fish can exhibit varying levels of aggression towards other species, with some individuals proving to be peaceful when provided with ample space and hiding spots within stony corals.
Aquarium Suitability
Two Stripe Damselfish are suitable for most aquariums, thriving best in pairs or shoals with a recommended ratio of 1 male to 5 or more females. However, aggression towards tank mates may occur if space is restricted, making adequate room a vital consideration for successful keeping.
Demands
Hardy in nature, these damselfish require a minimum tank size of 200 liters to accommodate their territorial behaviors and group dynamics. While best kept as a pair or in a larger shoal, monitoring aggressive tendencies is crucial, especially within smaller groups where hierarchical disputes may arise.
Care and Hardiness
Known for their hardiness, the Two Stripe Damselfish can tolerate a variety of water conditions within the ranges of pH 8.1-8.4, with a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) level between 8-12.
Reef Suitability
Considered reef-safe, these damselfish blend well within a coral-laden environment. They demonstrate a preference for hiding amongst stony corals such as Acropora, showcasing their adaptability and compatibility within reef setups.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, provide ample hiding spaces using branch-like stony corals alongside a sandy substrate to mimic their natural habitat. These fish are best suited in tanks with a variety of branching corals and minimal aggressive tank mates.
Behaviour
Two Stripe Damselfish exhibit social behavior and tend to thrive in close-knit groups or pairs. While they may showcase shoaling behavior initially, they can become territorial over time, particularly in confined spaces or limited group sizes.
Feeding and Diet
Their diet should consist of microalgae like spirulina, small crustaceans such as krill and artemia, and zooplankton like cyclops and pods. Feeding multiple times per day is ideal to sustain their energetic nature and dietary requirements.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in the Pacific Ocean, from Cocos-Keeling Islands to Samoa and southern Japan, the Two Stripe Damselfish prefers habitats with stony corals and adequate shelter. Their distribution extends from the East Indian Ocean to Australia, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific regions.
