General Description

The Yellowtail damselfish, scientifically known as Microspathodon chrysurus, belongs to the Pomacentridae family. When young, these fish exhibit vibrant dark colors and bluish spots, but as they mature, their colors become more subdued. They are generally aggressive and grow larger compared to other species in the family.

Aquarium Suitability

Yellowtail damselfish are suitable for aquariums with caution due to their aggressive nature. They can be kept with other fish but may become territorial and aggressive, especially towards peaceful or docile species. Regular feeding, offering lots of hiding places, and providing ample space in the tank can help mitigate their aggressive behavior to some extent.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

These fish are hardy and require a well-established aquarium with sufficient algae for grazing. It is essential to feed them algae-based foods to maintain a healthy immune system. Yellowtail damselfish also need good hiding spots, such as among live rocks, to help them feel secure in their environment.

Reef Suitability

Yellowtail damselfish are often considered reef-safe but can be territorial towards other species that encroach on their space within the reef. Therefore, caution is advised when keeping them in a reef setting to prevent conflicts with other tank inhabitants.

Aquarium Setup

Setting up a tank for Yellowtail damselfish should include ample space for swimming and territories. Adding live rocks with hiding spots is crucial, along with creating an environment rich in algae for grazing. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C (72-78°F) is essential for their well-being.

Behaviour

Yellowtail damselfish display aggressive behavior, particularly towards intruding fish in their territory. Their territorial nature makes it preferable to keep only one Yellowtail damselfish per tank unless in a very large aquarium where territories can be established without conflict.

Feeding and Diet

These fish primarily feed on small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Offering macroalgae like seaweed or nori, as well as microalgae like spirulina, is important to ensure a balanced diet for Yellowtail damselfish.

Habitat and Distribution

Yellowtail damselfish are found in the Mexican Gulf and the West Atlantic region. They inhabit coral reefs where they establish their territories, graze on algae, and exhibit their territorial behavior towards other fish in their vicinity.
