General Description
Neoglyphidodon nigroris, also known as the Black-and-gold chromis or Scarface damsel, is a member of the Pomacentridae family. These fish are visually striking when young, but their colors fade as they mature, making them less vibrant in appearance.
Aquarium Suitability
This species is considered suitable for aquariums, but with caution. They are territorial fish that prefer having their own space and can display aggression towards other fish in close proximity.
Demands, Care and Hardiness
The Black-and-gold chromis is classified as hardy, able to adapt well to various aquarium conditions. They require hiding spots, such as those found among live rocks, and typically thrive better without conspecifics in the tank.
Reef Suitability
Neoglyphidodon nigroris is regarded as reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef aquariums. Their territorial behavior can be managed within the reef environment.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate the Black-and-gold chromis, a minimum tank size of 300 liters is recommended. Providing ample hiding places, such as live rocks, is essential for their well-being. Maintaining water parameters within the range of pH 8.1-8.4, temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, and a salinity of 1.020-1.025 is crucial for their health.
Behaviour
These fish exhibit aggressive behavior towards other species, especially when those species encroach upon their territory. Establishing clear boundaries within the aquarium can help manage their territorial nature.
Feeding and Diet
Neoglyphidodon nigroris thrives on a diet consisting of microalgae like spirulina, small crustaceans such as krill and mysis, and zooplankton like Cyclops. Ensuring regular feeding with appropriate food sources is key to their nutrition.
Dimorphism (and captive reproduction If covered)
As they mature, Black-and-gold chromis may exhibit dimorphism in terms of coloration and size differences between males and females. Captive reproduction of this species may be achievable under suitable conditions.
Habitat and Distribution
These fish are native to the Indo-West Pacific region, including areas like the Andaman Sea, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, and Australia. Their distribution spans across various marine environments in this geographical area.
