General Description:
Neoglyphidodon oxyodon, commonly known as the Bluestreak damselfish, belongs to the Pomacentridae family. This species is characterized by its attractive appearance in the juvenile stage with vibrant colors that tend to fade as they mature. These fish are territorial and aggressive, especially the males, towards other approaching fishes in their vicinity.
Aquarium Suitability:
Considered suitable with care, the Bluestreak damselfish is known for its hardy nature. However, due to their territorial behavior and aggressive tendencies, they are best kept as the only damselfish in an aquarium unless it is a large tank with adequate space for territories to be established.
Demands:
This species requires a minimum tank size of 400 liters and thrives in environments with good hiding places, such as between live rocks. Bluestreak damselfish prefer water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity between 1.020-1.025, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Care and Hardiness:
Known for their hardiness, these damselfish are relatively easy to care for but can become aggressive towards other species, particularly when defending their territories. They are generally compatible with reef environments and are considered always reef safe.
Reef Suitability:
Bluestreak damselfish are compatible with reef setups, adding vibrancy to the tank. However, their territorial and aggressive nature may pose challenges when introducing other fish species, especially those that venture into their designated territories.
Aquarium Setup:
When setting up an aquarium for Bluestreak damselfish, providing ample hiding places like live rocks is crucial. Maintaining water parameters within the recommended ranges and ensuring enough space for territorial behavior are essential for the well-being of these fish.
Behaviour:
These damselfish exhibit territorial behavior and can be aggressive towards other fish that encroach upon their space. Males tend to display more aggression compared to females and smaller individuals.
Feeding and Diet:
Bluestreak damselfish have a varied diet that includes microalgae (e.g., spirulina), small crustaceans like krill and mysis, and zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Regular feeding with a mix of these foods ensures their nutritional needs are met.
Habitat and Distribution:
Found in the Western Central Pacific, including regions like the Indo-Australian Archipelago, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, the Bluestreak damselfish inhabits coral reefs. Their natural habitat consists of areas with adequate hiding spots and territories for establishing dominance.
