General Description

The McCullochi Clownfish, known for its striking smoky coloration with a white tail and head bar, is a rare find in the aquarium trade due to its origins in the protected waters of Lord Howe Island near Australia. Initially appearing in the US market in 2008 and successfully bred in captivity by LiveAquaria, this species boasts unique beauty and hardiness, making it an appealing choice for both novice and experienced aquarists.

Aquarium Suitability

With its hardy nature and acclimatization to home aquarium conditions, the McCullochi Clownfish proves to be well-suited for captivity. However, their semi-aggressive temperament suggests caution when housing them with other species, especially other clownfish, unless introduced simultaneously to reduce territorial behavior.

Care and Hardiness

Considered moderately demanding, the McCullochi Clownfish thrives in aquariums with stable water parameters, including a pH range of 8.0-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.021-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (dKH) of 8-12. They are omnivores with a varied diet, readily accepting meaty foods and herbivore preparations.

Reef Suitability

Reef enthusiasts can happily incorporate the McCullochi Clownfish into their setups as they are classified as reef-compatible. Their presence adds both visual appeal and character to reef environments, with minimal risk to coral and other inhabitants.

Aquarium Setup
