General Description
The Speckled Damselfish (Pomacentrus bankanensis) is a marine fish that displays vibrant coloration as a juvenile, transitioning to a more subdued appearance as it matures. As a juvenile, it showcases a brown body with striking orange hues above its midline, complemented by bright blue horizontal lines extending from its head to the back of its dorsal fin. The anal and pelvic fins also boast a vibrant blue outline, while its caudal fin is entirely white. Upon reaching adulthood, the Speckled Damselfish typically sports an overall brown hue with some white accents on its fins.
Aquarium Suitability
With an easy care level, this species proves to be a suitable option for aquarium enthusiasts. It is considered reef compatible and can thrive in semi-aggressive environments. It can be housed in pairs as long as both individuals are introduced to the tank simultaneously. An aquarium of at least 30 gallons or more is recommended to accommodate the needs of the Speckled Damselfish.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
The Speckled Damselfish is known for its hardy nature, making it a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Its semi-aggressive temperament should be considered when selecting tankmates. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness level (KH) of 8-12 is essential for its well-being.
Reef Suitability
Being reef compatible, the Speckled Damselfish can coexist with various coral species in a reef aquarium setup. Its peaceful nature towards corals makes it a desirable addition to a coral reef tank.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Speckled Damselfish, incorporate live rock to provide ample hiding spots and retreats for the fish. A tank size of at least 30 gallons or more is recommended to accommodate its active nature and to provide ample swimming space.
Behaviour
This damselfish species exhibits a semi-aggressive temperament, particularly towards its own kind or similar-looking species. Introducing them simultaneously to the tank can help mitigate territorial disputes. Despite their territorial tendencies, they can coexist peacefully with a variety of tankmates if given enough space.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, the Speckled Damselfish requires a diet rich in algae-based foods like spirulina, supplemented with small crustacean meat, krill, and zooplankton. Ensuring a varied diet will help promote their overall health and vitality in a captive aquarium environment.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Speckled Damselfish (Pomacentrus bankanensis) is commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coral-rich areas with plenty of hiding spots such as crevices and caves. Its natural habitat influences its preference for live rock structures in aquarium settings, mirroring its natural surroundings to provide a suitable environment for this species.
