General Description
The Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus) is a striking fish species typically varying in color from bright red to dark maroon with three narrow white stripes. Originating from the waters of Sumatra, these clownfish develop their distinct gold stripes around 9-12 months of age, with the coloration starting at the head stripe.
Aquarium Suitability
Known for their ease of care, Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish are popular additions to aquariums. However, they do not coexist peacefully with other clownfish unless in a mated pair. It is advisable to keep them singly unless a bonded pair is acquired. Notably, the gold stripe variation of this species tends to exhibit slightly lower aggression levels compared to the White Striped type.
Care and Hardiness
With a reputation for being long-lived, Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish have been known to spawn for over 35 years in captivity. These fish can grow to over 6 inches in size, making them one of the larger clownfish species. Care for this species involves offering a diet consisting of meaty foods and herbivore preparations.
Reef Suitability
Reef enthusiasts will find the Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish reef-compatible. Their presence adds vibrancy and activity to reef environments, showcasing their omnivorous feeding habits.
Aquarium Setup
To house a Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish, a tank of at least 113 liters capacity is recommended, with water conditions maintained at a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, pH level between 8.1-8.4, and a carbonate hardness (KH) between 8-12. When handling these fish, care must be taken to avoid entangling their cheek spines; using a specimen container for capture is advised.
Behaviour
With a semi-aggressive temperament, Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish exhibit typical territorial behavior, especially towards conspecifics. Observing them in a singular tank setting can help mitigate aggressive interactions.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivorous eaters, these clownfish consume a variety of meaty foods and herbivore preparations. Providing a balanced diet ensures their nutritional needs are met for optimal health and vibrancy.
Habitat and Distribution
Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish are found in the waters around Sumatra, showcasing a natural habitat in coral reefs. Their distribution in the wild reflects their affinity for reef ecosystems, making them well-suited for captive reef tank environments.
